This American counting song is set to the tune of the American Civil War tune "When Johnny Comes Marching Home", which in turn lifted its melody from the Irish anti-war song "Johnny I Hardly Knew Ye".
The author of the lyrics is unknown, but they appear to date back to the late 1940's or early 1950's.
