Origins of "Dream Angus"

Angus is here wi' dreams to sell o
Hush my wee bairnie and sleep without fear
Dream Angus has brought you a dream my dear
Can ye no hush yer weepin'
All the wee bairns are sleepin'
Birdies are nestling, an' nestling' together
Dream Angus is hurplin' o'er the heather
Dreams to sell, fine dreams to sell,
Angus is here wi' dreams to sell o
Hush my wee bairnie an' sleep without fear
Dream Angus has brought you a dream my dear
Hear the curlew cryin' o
An' the echoes dyin' o
Even the birdies are cuddled up sleepin
But my bonnie bairn is weepin' greetin'
Dreams to sell, fine dreams to sell,
Angus is here wi' dreams to sell o
Hush my wee bairnie an' sleep without fear
Dream Angus has brought you a dream my dear
Soon the lavrock sings his song
Welcoming the coming dawn
Lambies coorie doon together
Wi' the yowies in the heather
Dreams to sell, fine dreams to sell,
Angus is here wi' dreams to sell o
Hush my wee bairnie an' sleep without fear
Dream Angus has brought you a dream my dear
Origins of "Dream Angus"
The lyrics to this gentle Scottish lullaby are an empty threat from a mother at her wits end because her child will not go to sleep.
Dream Angus is a mythical Scottish figure, equivalent to the American "sandman". However, Angus is a malevolent character. If he finds a child who is still awake, he will produce a bottle of whisky and sit by the child's bed, swigging from the bottle. If the child is still awake by the time the whisky finished, he hits them over the head with the empty bottle.
The history of the lullaby is obscure, although it has been suggested that it was written by Mary Fraser, of Edinburgh, in the early 20th century.
