Lyrics of "Brahms' Lullaby"
Origins of "Brahms' Lullaby"

With pink roses bedight,
With lilies o'erspread,
Is my baby's sweet head.
Lay you down now, and rest,
May your slumber be blessed!
Lay you down now, and rest,
May your slumber be blessed!
Lullaby, and sleep tight.
Hush! My darling is sleeping,
On his sheets white as cream,
With his head full of dreams.
He will wake in the morn,
When noontide warms the world,
When the sky's bright with dawn,
He will frolic in the sun.
Origins of "Brahms' Lullaby"
This is probably the most famous lullaby in the world, and various lyrics have been written to fit Johannes Brahms(1833-1897) melody, which he first published in 1868 as "Wiegenlied: Guten Abend, Gute Nacht".
The first verse of Brahms' original lyrics came from a collection of German folk poems called "Des Knaben Wunderhorn", while the second was written by Georg Scherer (1824-1909) in 1849.
Guten Abend, gute Nacht,
Mit Rosen bedacht,
Mit Näglein besteckt,
Schlüpf unter die Deck!
Morgen früh, wenn Gott will,
Wirst du wieder geweckt.
Guten Abend, gute Nacht,
Von Englein bewacht,
Die zeigen im Traum
Dir Christkindleins Baum.
Schlaf nun selig und süß,
Dchau im Traum 's Paradies.
Brahms's Lullaby is also commonly sung to the Hebrew words of Jacob's blessing in Genesis 48:16
