Smiles await you when you rise
Sleep pretty baby, do not cry
And I will sing a lullaby
Care you know not, therefore sleep
While I o'er you watch do keep
Sleep pretty baby, do not cry
And I will sing a lullaby
This lullaby was written by the English Elizabethan dramatist Thomas Dekker (1572-1632), and was first published as "Cradle Song" in 1603, in his play, "The Pleasant Comodie of Patient Grissill". The original lyrics were:
Golden slumbers kisse your eyes
Smiles awake you when you rise
Sleepe pretty wantons, doe not cry,
And I will sing a lullabie.
Rocke them, rocke them, lullabie.
Care is heavy, therefore sleepe you,
You are care and care must keep you:
Sleepe pretty wantons, doe not cry,
And I will sing a lullabie,
Rocke them, rocke them, lullabie.
The poem was famously adapted by Paul McCartney for the Beatles album, Abbey Road. He used only the first verse of the poem as the chorus for his song:
Once there was a way to get back homeward
Once there was a way to get back home
Sleep pretty darling do not cry
And I will sing a lullaby
Golden slumbers fill your eyes
Smiles awake you when you rise
Sleep pretty darling do not cry
And I will sing a lullabye
Once there was a way to get back homeward
Once there was a way to get back home
Sleep pretty darling do not cry
And I will sing a lullaby
